Roadside

Roadside help — not everything needs a tow

A good share of the calls we get do not need a tow truck at all, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than load your car and charge you for it. Three problems account for almost all of it: the battery is dead, the keys are shut inside, or the tank ran dry. All three get fixed where the car stands.

ONE TOWING truck on a roadside assistance call in Tampa, Florida
Most roadside calls end without the car ever going on the truck.

What gets fixed on the spot

  • A dead battery — boosted, and then watched to see whether it actually holds.
  • Keys locked inside the car or the trunk, opened without damage on most vehicles.
  • An empty tank — enough fuel brought to you to reach the nearest station.
  • And what does not: we do not change tires, and we do not do mechanical repairs at the roadside. Those go to a shop, and we can take the car there.

How we work out which one you need

  1. 1You describe what happened. For a car that will not start, the sound it makes when you turn the key tells us most of it.
  2. 2We say plainly whether this is a roadside job or a tow. Roadside is cheaper, and steering you to the expensive one would be a bad way to keep a customer.
  3. 3You get the price for whichever it is, before anyone sets off.
  4. 4The driver comes out and does the work at the car.
  5. 5If the roadside fix does not hold — a battery that will not keep charge, for instance — the truck is already there, and we tell you the tow price before loading.

What it costs

Roadside work is quoted on the call — call for price. We deliberately do not print a number, because a lockout on a ten-year-old sedan and a lockout on a new SUV are not the same job.

The price you hear on the phone is the price you pay. It does not change when the driver sees the car.

Roadside is nearly always cheaper than a tow, which is exactly why we would rather sell you the cheaper one and have you call us again.

Local tow from $95. We will not give you an arrival time over the internet that we might not keep — call and we will tell you where the truck actually is.

Roadside Assistance — common questions

What exactly do you fix on the roadside?

Jump starts, lockouts and fuel delivery. That is the list, and we keep it short on purpose — those three are the ones that can be done properly at the side of a road.

Do you change tires?

No. If a tire is gone, we tow the car to a shop that can replace it properly. Fitting a tire on a dark shoulder is not something we are willing to do half-well.

What if the roadside fix does not work?

Then the truck is already with you and we load the car. You hear the tow price at that point, before anything moves, not on the invoice afterwards.

Why will you not put prices on the website?

Because a single printed number would be wrong more often than right, and a wrong number quoted online turns into an argument at the roadside. One phone call and you have the real figure.
